When I installed my CO detector, I called Kidde tech support about the location.  They said it could be high or low since CO just mixed with the air.  I think they had said that it should be no closer than 6 inches from the ceiling.  I do not remember exactly.  If I were installing another one, I would call the manufacturer again unless their manual stated clearly where it should be.

I still do think there is an education issue involve here.  I do not believe anyone on this board would leave a car running in that situation even if you knew that the room was sealed and you had a working CO detector.  The detectors job is to alert you to an unknown problem, not to be used as an excuse for creating the problem.
