Hi all,

I just got a 95 Chevy S-10 LS 4 cylinder, 5 Speed Manuel, 2 wheel drive,Can't
find it in FMCA tow guide or others. doesn't go back far enough. Anybody know if it can be towed all 4 down or do I have to remove drive shaft. lots of Chevy's trucks can be towed but depends on the year. Thanks for any advice.

Do you have the owners manual for it? If not, try to get one, it will tell you if you can or not.....don't just take somebody's word for it unless you have a lot of money to fix it if they are wrong.  :)

Ed; Thanks

I will look to see if the neighbor i bought it from has one. And No I don't have a lot of money to fix it!
The truck has always been serviced at the dealer, not a scratch on it, has a shell in the same condition. Inside looks like no one ever sat in it. He didn't need it anymore and knew we want a truck for behind the bus and was aking only 1,000.00. Couldn't turn it down if I can't tow it flat I may trade it for a Toyota 4x4.

I have been towing my 2002 S-10 five speed 4 down without a problem.  When I have the truck lubed, I request that they overfill the transmission by a inch or two.  So far, so good but my mileage is only been about 10,000 miles.  My recollection is that GM does not recommend towing four down.  The concern is if the bearing get grease when in neutral.

I have a 96 GMC 4cly, 5spd and the factory does not recommend towing without removing the driveline.   I installed a Remco driveline with the disconnect that I have been using for the last ten years.  However, I have heard of people (like Art) that tow without disconnecting the driveline and haven't had a problem.  Supposedly the rear bearing in the transmission does't get lubricated when towing.  I have seen other 5 speed transmissions blow up from towing without removing the driveline.

Long John;
Thank you or the link, but I got one from the neighbor and it does say trailer or short tow rear up but doesn't actually say no flat tow.

ArtGill;
Not a bad Idea because it would be that when turning in Neural only the primary shaft would be turning and gear oil would not be reaching the top without the other shaft turning. So extra would help but might get some leakage or blow the rear seal if not stopping to let cool at times. FWIW

Geoff;
Didn't want the extra cost but if something happened would be even more cost to replace tranny eh! think I will try finding a used Toyota 4x4. Even though they say you can't either I know that a lot of people do and don't have any problems because of positive lockout with the Transfer case neutral.

I went to Remco's site and looked up a driveline disconnect for a S-15 and they want $750 for it!  Ten years ago I paid maybe half of that direct from Remco.

The truck is fifteen years old.  I think it will be just fine and personally would chance it.  The weak spot is the rear bearing.  I would follow Art's recommendation and keep the tranny a little overfull.

If you are still concerned about it, start shopping for a spare.  Probably cheaper than a disconnect and you could change it on the side of the road in an hour.

I am laughing reading your post. I know you are probably serious and I also know that is what I was thinking too, LOL

Call Remco and see if your transmission can use the lube pump.  They will need to know the model of transmission.  We have a 72 chevy truck that we will be using the pump on.  You can pick the pump up used and the actual plumbing of it isn't hard.  We are going to do the install ourselves.

He has a manual transmission.  The lube pump is for an automatic.

Check the usual sources, ebay, craigslist etc.  maybe someone is parting out an S-10 that had a disconnect on it.

I have puled my 92 s10 a lot of miles. But I seldom run the interstate and stop every 100 or so miles and just crank the engine and let it run for a few minutes.

It still is just as quite as ever no bearing noise.

I will be pulling it to Jack's the year.  It has been to BK rally, and down the natchez trace and back.

we pull or gmc express van with the engine in nuetral and running.  it is automatic, not manual.  so far, we've pulled to tx to florida to ohio and back a few times.  no issues with anything.  i'm knocking on wood as i type this.  ;).

i thought it would be less pain than a trailer, less costly than a drive disconnect.  if fuel doesn't quit going up soon, my theory will be wrong.
