Our local Kijiji has a ad for two silver detroit diesel engines.

The ad states:  serial numbers on the two engines one number apart.
engines based on the 6-71 but more horsepower upwards of 500
                       259 hours, barely broken in.
                       Pictures available

I contacted the seller with the question;  left or right turning? send me the pictures.

His reply was one turns left one turns right.  Advised me they are just out of town he would take me to them.

I do not have any expierance determing wether these are painted silver or are legitimate silver engines.

I am also not in need of another engine but...... then again I wasn't before I bought the last one :)

How about some tips on what to look for??

I hope Don will chime in here, but I'm gonna guess these are out of a twin screw boat.  One for each side.  Too weird for them to be 1 serial number apart.  Keep us posted!

Marine engines after cooled turbo could be DDEC engines iif they are a DDEC and you don't want them let me know I do , they were  in a tandem setup he may be saying both together are 500 hp

good luck

My original thoughts were they were out of a boat.  But most of the lakes around here would not support the HP of those engines :)

Since they are right around my home town I thought I could at least go look at them, and find out the  "story"

If they are what they are I 'm sure someone here might want them.

I'll keep you posted. :)

Paso, if they didn't come from a boat could be a tandem setup used on a drilling rig or other applications like a saw mill, DD had quads in the 6-71 rated at 1000 hp

Okay that makes sense as Weyerhouser just closed a paper mill north of here lots of sawmill plants etc... in that area shut down big buck equipment sitting all over.

Maybe bobofthenorth will comment as that was in his neck of the woods:0

Don Fairchild

Paso,

please go and look at them for us.
like Clifford, if they are ta engines I am intrested in them, actually I am intrested if they are just Turbo engines.

If they are TA 's look at the thermostat housing and their will be a tube from it to a flange in the block by the blower and the air horn will be off set with an actuator on the top to one side. The reason they are one number apart is that they were ordered from the factory for that application. as Clifford said If they are non marine twin T's they are 250hp each 500hp for the pair and they will drive thru a twin gear box with one output shaft either belt or chain drive. as was stated they were the main stay in the oil fields for many years and their are still some of them out their now.

If you will give me the serial numbers I can tell you what they are.

Hope this helps.

Don

I e'mail him and told him I wanted to go  take a look at them.

I will go take pictures, #'s etc and post them.

I will look for the things you mentioned Don.

I am not interested in purchasing them for myself as I'm already well into my engine swap. But I am willing to help since they are so close to home.

The last version of the Marine 6-71 was a 485hp @ 2,500rpm that Detroit made.  That horsepower is a peak 15 minute rating, with continuous still being way down at 180hp @ 1,800rpm.  The maximum truck version with turbocharge and aftercooling was a 330hp version with 950lb/ft torque.  If anyone buys these engines, the first thing would be to reduce the injectors down to N80's for 300hp, and N90's for 330hp.  If you have a 4 spd manual, the N80's should be the max.  If you have an automatic- the N90's could be used.  Good Luck, TomC

I'd enjoy seeing them too Paul but I think it will probably get too complicated to coordinate our schedules.  If you let me know when you are going it might work out though.

Hi Bob the guy just called me and he said  I could look at them tonight or tomorrow. I suggested a friend might want to look at them with me so.... tomorrow would be better.

He said he would call me again later tonight.  He was driving back from Humboldt

He said they are attached to a generator.

Apparently they are just outside Saskatoon. :)

If you want to link up call me  (Area code you know  )  242-2505

Clifford or Don I'll try determine what he wants $$ wise.

Okay here is the scoop  The person selling the motors was hired to clean up property that they are stored on.  They are basically stripping the working generator for the copper.  I believe the paint could have 259 hours on them but I don't know. He will sell them complete with the skid and gear box and or in the truck van they are sitting inside.  There is also crates of parts etc...
