MCI 102 Front Bumper Restoration

Fellows,

The front bumper on my MCI 102 has seen better days. I'm not sure what the material is, plastic or rubber, but I would like to restore it.

Has  any of you completed a restoration of your bumper? If so, what process was used and what type of material was applied?

I recently attended the Redmond FMCA Convention and saw a bumper that had been coated with a bed liner material but it appeared pretty rough and the owner said it was hard to keep clean.

Any ideas?

Hi Doug,

Paint!

I sanded and stripped my rubber bumper. Then primed it before paint.

So far 5 years and it still holding up great!

Doug, if you use paint, talk to the automotive paint supplier.  In the old days, they had a "flex additive" for the paint that made it more flexible for use on bumpers of cars.

May have something different today with all the new paint technology.

Doug, bed liner spray is not a bad way to go I am sure someone in your area can spray the smooth on if  not I know a guy in ALB NM that can do it smooth and in all colors he going to spray the wheel wells on the outside and do the bumpers on Sonja's new toy never have to worry about rock chips with that stuff.
He does a good job on the battery compartments and bays also, he is a bus owner and he knows what it takes to make owners happy

Nick,

Does the rubber sand easily or try to ball up? What kind of primer and what kind of paint?

I checked with the local automotive paint shop and they have a bumper paint? Just wondering what you used.

I have a 96a3 and restored both front and rear over the past two years.The material is a hard rubber. My paint guy said the addition of a flex agent wasn't necessary, just strip, sand, fill dings with spot putty, than prime and paint. Key too all this, he said, was to be sure that all ingredients are compatible.
I am very satisfied with the outcome of mine.  YMMV.
