I wouldnt have normally done thins, but the proposed engine swap this clown started sounded like it would make for a very interesting discussion. I'm gonna go start some popcorn.

Art,

I saw that one too!

Why he thought taking out a Detroit 6v71 and attempting to put in a GM 454 was a good idea.......I don't know.... :o

Serious accident ???  ?
I wonder if it had anything to do with an engine falling on him?

Gee Whiz.

What a shame. Amazing, isn't it, how worthy vehicles can turn to dust? Makes you wonder what the Hell happened...

The really sad part is it sounds like it ran and drove before he attempted the abortion.

Oh my ???   As a former owner of a S&S that had a 454 gas engine in it I am really confused about the solution he arrived at on improving mileage over the 671.
Wonder how everything was going to bolt up? I have read that some of the very early GM buses had 2 gas engines when one was not enough, maybe 2 454's would have worked.

Fully seated 4104, hmmm....too bad he doesn't mention the shape the tires are in.  If the tires are decent, you could pop that 671 back in there and pick up a load of passengers, get it right back into revenue service where it belongs. ;).   Also without a radiator the bus won't have any coolant ....so right away no coolant overheating problems!

On a more serious note, this may still be a good coach, all he did was pull the engine,(and clutch and tranny)  A little love and tenderness and that might end up a nice coach....also maybe the intakes were protected from the beginning, which shows a little forethought.

It appears to have good rear glass.  That would be about half the value of this bus.

First off I have to ask, What was he thinking??  If you're going to do a motor swap in a classic piece of equipment you need a classic motor.  Since he wanted to go to a gas engine, I would have to suggest something from an early vintage John Deere.  Then he would have that cool putt-putt sound.

You think the 6-71 was slow with 570lb/ft of torque (stock)?  Much slower with the 454 with about 400lb/ft torque.  Most 4104's get in the 8-10mpg, just cut that in half for the 454.

I'm one of the driver's for my mens chorus (Masters of Harmony) that has a Chevy pickup with a 454 throttle body injected pulling a fifth wheel-weighing in at 16,000lbs. If driven easy cruising around 60mph, I can squeeze 6mpg out of it.  So someone was blowing smoke thinking that ANY gasoline engine would get better fuel mileage than a Diesel.  Too bad!  Good Luck, TomC
