Hopefully I am not upsetting anybody with all my questions.

I have among my stash of parts left over from our school bus project, an www.Auberins.com model SYL-1813 digital readout that can be set up to read engine or oil temperature, turbo temperature, oil, fuel or water pressure, voltage or turbo boost. It all depends on what kind of sensor you want to use. These are not very expensive on Ebay. Unlike the skoolie bus, which would have required maybe six feet of cabling, the coach will take around 40 feet. Is that too long a run to give accurate readings?

I don't think you need any cable at all.   This unit instead uses a large carrion-eating bird for its communication protocol:  "It will also close a relay output port that can be used to turn on a buzzard" (as per eBay listing).   I guess as long as there is an ample supply of rotting flesh available it will work just fine.

I think you need to contact the seller, and ultimately the manufacturer for that information.  I believe, though I'm not completely positive, that thermocouples are calibrated to the cable length provided.

If a gauge has a specific ohm value that it has to run at, then the proper length cable must be used to maintain that ohm value for accuracy.  I know that gauge manufacturers that make pyrometers (exhaust temp gauge) make cables up to 50ft (maybe even longer) since the pyrometer works on a heat bulb making only micro voltage.

What I did was to go to Home Depot and buy 5 different colored 50ft 3 wire extension cords and ran them from the engine compartment to the drivers compartment.  I also cut the cords 4 ft from the plug, so the plug is in the engine compartment to make pulling the engine cradle easy-just unplug the cords.  Made adding gauges like the tach, trans temp gauge, and cruise control a snap.  Good Luck, TomC
