I have noticed various positive comments on having a second oil filter on Allison transmissions. ( yes Luvrbus I do alertly read your posts  ) :)

Both comments were deep in other peoples threads so as to not Hijack the post I thought I would ask here.

I am ready to finish the engine swap and thought  while the engine is out I should consider this modification as I have a spare V730 with the oil filter attachments.

From the posts I have gleaned that Allison recomended this in some applications, I also understood it provides additional cooling benefits as well as the obvious  better filtering.

What  is the best way to accomplish this, butt the two filter housings together and use the same hoses that originally went to  the one filter housing  OR...  Have the second filter remotely mounted using additional hoses ( that will also improve cooling )

I don't have any cooling issues now but from expierance I know the long term benifits of keeping the tranny temps down.

This modification seems like a no brainer as I have all the parts just sitting there.

Then as I finish typing this post I think I may as well plumb in a remote cooler :)  I think I am catching  "while-im-at-itis"

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the second trans filter. I haven't seen any with two filters.  My V730 has one, and it just doesn't get dirty.  My truck with HT740 has only one filter also (and it was installed a year ago).  With your 6V-71, you're going to be spending alot of time in converter mode.  I would consider adding an auxiliary transmission cooler with thermostatically controlled fan between your hot trans fluid out and your existing shell trans cooler.  This will be beneficial when you finally get fed up with the severe lack of power the 6V-71 has and install a 6V-92TA (a relatively easy swap since both engines are identical on the outside, sans the addition of the turbocharger).  Good Luck, TomC

If the only value of a second transmission filter is for additional cooling I would think that the time, effort and money would be better spent on an oil to air heat exchanger. This is something I have been thinking of doing after reading Clifford's posts. Not high on my list of priorities yet.
Thanks for your thoughts Tom, Sam MC8

Double filters help with cooling I would not install one just for cooling but they do help fwiw you can not buy a Allison Transmission rebuilt by a authorized dealer that does not require double filters for warranty  on a V730 or whatever ever wonder why the WT transmission B500 has 2 filters Allison believes in 2 filters system and so do I, wouldn't own a Allison without the setup.
I know the guy that installed TomC's 740 in his truck he is very lucky he even got 1 whatever you guys want to do it belongs to you not me

good luck

Thanks for the comments.

I think it is worthy of adding simply because it is such a easy install. It certainly can't hurt anything.

In a previous life I had the pleasure of rebuilding automatic transmissions I know what heat can do. :(

I will likely be installing the thermostatically controlled auxilary cooler for just that reason.

My original plan Tom was to install the 8V71 that I have sitting in the shop but this 6V is so fresh :)

Sam I can't see much effort installing the extra filter the only cost should be the fitting joining the two filters.

The other upside is I won't have to store that extra filter housing and hoses on the shop shelf :):)
