First 5C ever built?

I recently acquired a 1977 5C. The unit no. is 7401. By looking at the incomplete list on Angelfire, I see that maybe MCI started the 5Cs with the 7400 series of numbers. So maybe I have the first 5C ever built? The PO tells me that it was in San Diego, CA doing airport transfers before it was sold and converted in '93. Would anybody be able to tell with more certainty? Maybe there is information out there that someone knows about...

I think you have a real good claim to having one of the first, if not the first MC-5C.  That list is confusing and as you say incomplete.  The main MCI page does state clearly that the unit number range used for the 5C was 7401 to 7780.  But the list has 7407 listed as a 5B.  In your place I'd make the claim!  My 5C is 7732, so towards the end of the run.

My MCI 7 manual tells you the numbers.  That should confirm it I would think.  If all diagrams for MCI 5c's start with 7401, you've probably got it.  You could try calling them...

Good luck!

Great info Roadrunnertex! That is indeed my bus: 7401, S12776. So maybe it ended up in CA some time after that, for the PO to tell me that it was in San Diego.

It is remarquebly rust free, considering it started it's life back East.

So I can rest at peace now, smug with the knowledge that I have the no 1 5C... ;)

Oh God! there won't be any living with you at the next rally.  I can see it now, a big flashing neon arrow pointing at your bus saying  " First 5C ever built"  ;D ;D ;D

Cool!! Are there any photos of how it looked original? You have a great responsibility now to document it and take good care of it! Congratulations!

Sometimes the more I think about something the less I think about something.    As soon as I save a little money my bus finds out.                                      Why grab a plane when you can take the bus ?                         If I'm wrong 10% of the time how can the "Queen" be right 100%

It just occurred to me that if I ever park beside JC at a rally, I can put up a sign that says "my bus is newer than his bus"...   ;D
