I need a larger transmission cooler according to the transmission shop.

I have a cooler now that has 3/4" input and output lines for the transmission oil and 1 1/2" in and out for the water lines.

I am wanting a cooler with 1 1/4" oil lines and 2" water lines that can handle 150 lbs of pressure on the oil side.

My transmission has a retarder and I was told that I should have the larger cooler if I want to use it (the retarder).

New Flyer makes the larger cooler but they only sell to bus companies.

New Flyer just gets them from elsewhere.

Perhaps you should add an oil to air cooler, inline and ahead of the one that dumps all the heat into the engine coolant? MC8's aren't known for having an excess of cooling capacity to deal with higher transmission temps.

A number of busnuts have done it this way, in order to shed the heat before it goes into the engine coolant. Run the fans when needed.

These folks, under the "Allison Transmission coolers" section have some interesting things with 3/4 or 1" oil lines and high flow rates:

On an MC8, the side engine access door on the curb side is a popular mounting location, replace the skin with some mesh to match the radiator intake above it. Jack Conrad has some good pics showing his install.

Mel go to www.utxchange.com and let them size one for you and they aren't bad on prices I am sure they will have something to work with your ZF transmission

Whatever you do don't go with the kind that came stock from SETRA on our S417's!
It is a part Setra chose and installed not Allison! But I have had 2 of them fail within 3 months on the same bus! First one I PAID for the new cooler & trans (so glad I decided to go with an authorized Allison shop and re-manned trans) this time it's on SETRA's DIME!

I kept my original trans cooler and added a cooler with electric fan from Bulkpart.com.  It is the DB-431D-12.  Granted with thermostat it is close to $600.00, but it also takes alot of strain off the radiator cooler.  Good Luck, TomC

Melbo,

I upgraded my GMC 4905 to a 6V92 with an Allison V730.  I am using the stock tube cooler, but also got an auxiliary secondary cooler, with a fan (fan can be ordered either 12v or 24v).

I went to American Industrial and went with the LP300-6.  I believe the specs are 400 degrees, 300 psi, with 1 1//2" npt inlet and outlet.

Two years ago it cost me (including shipping) around $600.00

Thank you all for the replies.

Clifford I have contacted the transmission exchange and they needed heat rejection figures

I just got some numbers and I need to contact them again and see if these numbers match up

Chris I will check that out.
