the only thing I can think of is wouldn't you be putting the power in on the coast side of the hypoid gear?  The angles are worse, but I have heard of this being done using normal truck gears in a bus application, although I have no idea where I heard it.  The transmission should be OK, may even get a new lease on life if you are putting power into the coast side of the gears.  In my race gearboxes we change the gears all the time and pay no attention to if they are in power to one side of the gear tooth or the other,
