We had a visit from Rusty, looking at our bus, and the subject of trash compactors came up. Just wondering how many of you have them in your bus? We have one, and would not want to be without it. Before it, we were constantly hunting places to get rid of our trash, usually a bag a day. Now, with 3 of us in the bus, we only need to take it out about every 3 weeks. We have one that is 15 inches wide, so doesn't take up much space for the benefit we get from it.

Some people love them, some don't.  I wish that I had one, simply because most of my trash is stuff like milk jugs, empty cans, etc.  However, they take up space, which is at a premium in a coach.

We recycle the heck out  of ourselves, which means sorting and separating, and organic vs plastic vs cans vs paper vs I don't know what else.  At home, we end up with about a grocery bag of "trash" a week that isn't recycled (my shop trash aside - that can fill a dumpster sometimes!).  Doesn't always end up working out for us, but we like to at least try.

Understand, however,  ;D  Myself as a woman, I like having it, as I rather have it in the compactor, than sitting around in a bag. We dont put food in it, as that might reek alittle bit. I guess a lot prob depends on how your use it. With us and our schedule, and having to spend a lot of time in the walmart parking lot, it works out nice for us.

I wish I could get my friends to recycle.  There are nine or more of us on trips (two vehicles) and we can easily generate a 55 gallon trash bag or two every day.  50% of it could be recycled.  Finding room to haul the trash out gets to be an issue.

I like trash compactors --- it is the only appliance that I know of that can turn ten pounds of trash into ten pounds of trash

Mine came with one as an entertainer coach. When I remodeled I trashed it. But I did put in a 18" dishwasher. Its great to pack up camp load it let it wash while driving down the road and start clean at the next stop I know for me it uses less water than I would plus I don't like doing dishes. I put in a single compartment sink and have that much more counter space. But that's just my way

We installed one when we converted in 1999, it was in the bus for three years and we never used it. Took it out and it has been setting in the garage since.

We have a very easy solution. I take it out every day! I need the exercise anyway! ;D

Space in our coach is at a premium, wish it was a 45 footer with slides! ;)

Hi ruthi,
The Walmarts we have stayed at have had trash containers in their parking lots.
If you don't put food waste in your trash compactor you must carry it out regularly so why not take the other trash out with it? I would rank a trash compactor right up there with an ice maker as unnecessary space wasters. A dishwasher I would like if my wife wouldn't use more water to rinse the dishes than it would take to just wash them (at home). I tried to convince her that they don't need rinsing before I gave up and let her do it her way.
Your way is whats best for you since you pretty much full time in your bus. We use ours much less frequently and not at all from mid October til mid May most years.
Good luck, Sam MC8

Sam, we have come across many walmarts that dont have trash containers, as well as many times they are full, and there is no room. We dont have food very often to take out, as we eat a lot of sandwiches and microwave meals. If there is any food items to be thrown away, I much rather put it in a small walmart bag, and get rid of it, much easier than trying to find room for large trash bags. We were having to take the trash out every day, too much for me. Everyone lives a little differently, and for us, the space is well worth it. If we werent in ours all the time, prob not. A dishwasher would be a waste for us, as I only occasionally cook a meal. Youd be surprised as to how conservative I can be at washing a few dishes up. ;D Take care, thanks to all who responded.
