Thought I would through this out for your opinion.  I have a friend that has a older conversion with an 8V-71 and  looking

at the engine on the left side his air cleaner canisters are missing the bottoms and the filters are exposed.  Question is,

would it hurt the engine in the long run, or does it  get more air this way?

    Just wondering!

Not enough information.

If the filter inserts are securely mounted and have a good seal over the duct to the engine intake plenum, the only risk is that the filter might get wet or get more incidental junk on it, as opposed to the prefiltering of the original ductwork between the outside world and the filter.

However, if there is any way for air to bypass the insert, then your friend has a real problem on his hands.

It appears that the filters have been converted from oil to paper by attaching them and leaving the bottom pans off. If this is so then it is probably ok.

However, it those filters are the original metal sponge type then, as Tom, says, very bad.
