To fast idle or not to fast idle, that is the question

My understanding is that it is more of a compression issue...that a certain amount of RPM is needed to keep the rings seated on the piston ring lands. I don't buy into the fuel washing because if you have injectors with proper spray patterns, then the fuel will be burned...maybe it comes back to the compression...?
