A friend is looking for a used PC in the <100 range.  Any tips for checking out a used machine?

Thanks,

Len

Actually, he is looking at a couple of used machines, one I think from another friend of his.  Both are Dells with XP and Office loaded and include the peripherals. He asked me how to check them out.  All I could say is if they boot in a reasonable time and Word can load a file quickly, they are probably OK.

Just wondering if there are any other things to look for, or simple tests that can be done.

Thanks

All I can say is most computers are sold because they are outdated, not because they are broken.  As noted, if it powers on and boots the OS it should be okay.  I would certainly reinstall the OS if getting a used computer.  Windows tends to get clogged with crap over time and starts to slow down and show other issues.

A company called recoupit.com is selling a Compaq Evo D530 including Windows XP Pro for only $80.  We used to use these at work and they are a pretty decent little system.  They are used with 30 day warranty.
