We're heading to Rapid City for Christmas. No bus, just family in a hotel.

Are there any Busnuts there that I can email to get some local information?

thanks

Gumpy,
We're on the other end of SDF but I'm pretty knowledgeable about the hills.
What can I help you with?

Thanks,  I should have posted more info up front. I'm primarily looking for recommendations on restaurants in the area where we can go out to eat, and also something for Christmas dinner,
either at a restaurant, or something for takeout to eat at the hotel.

I only know of one good restaurant in R.C. It's the Firehouse. A microbrewery. I'm sure there are more, and I hope one of them will be open on Christmas day, or at least that morning.

We're planning to go see the monument, as my Father-in-Law (who has been everywhere!!) has actually never been there. We might go down to Hot Springs one day, too. Other than that
suggestions for other activities might be beneficial. Handicap accessible.

thanks

Gumpy;
I have a lot of family in Rapid City and my son just moved to Custer. We spend time there in the summer but try to leave by Oct.For restaurants most of local s eat at Colonial house. Also try Minerva's,Alpine Inn in Hill City and one of my favorits is Roundhouse restaurant in Lead.I will try to find out if there  is any place open Christmas Day.We park our Bus just a half mile or so from Colonial House and eat there a lot. There is also several chain restaurants such as Chilies,Red Lobster,Bostons etc.

Gumpy,
There are plenty of good restaurants in RC. We enjoy Golden Corral when we go. I know, buffet, but pretty good. Everybody gets their choice of food and no decisions need be made. You will have no problem finding good places to eat. Most of the big chains like Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Ruby Tuesdays, Applebys, etc are there too. Also several good steak houses. I suspect there are several open Christmas.

Be sure to tour the downtown where the life size statues of the presidents are located on the corners of the streets.

If you get to Hot Springs, the Mammoth Dig is pretty interesting. The Reptile Gardens are also pretty nice near RC. I don't know the winter status of these things though.

Of course Rushmore and Crazy Horse monuments are nice. They can be seen from the road and no entry fee is needed.

A drive through Custer State Park and Wind Cave Park are nice.

There are a lot of elk in the Pringle area if you've never seen them. Also around the western side of RC.

Being from Alaska, I haven't done Bear Country. Wolf Country didn't impress me either.

New Cabelas there too. That rings some folks bell.

If you approach from I-90 East, plan a stop in Wall at Wall Drug. Not only the tourist things but a lot of local ranchers do business there.

We did Bear Country in the jeep. I wasn't expecting much and ended up being pleasantly surprised by it.  Would do it again if in the area.
Used to own a 1968 MCI 5A and a 1977 5C.

Thanks to all for the info. I'll be print it off and looking up the restaurants and attractions. Some I've been to before. I went to Reptile Gardens when I was about 10. I have a photo someplace of me tickling an alligator. We went back several years ago with the kids. It was definitely not the same as I remember. I was at Crazy Horse then, also. All that was done was the hole between the horse's neck and the indian's arm. I've seen it on TV lately, and there's quite a bit more done, but nothing like it was supposed to be by now :)
I didn't know there was a Cabela's there. Turns out we'll be staying right across the interstate from it. Not that big of a deal. There's one 7 miles away from me. But a nice place to waste a few hours with the in-laws.

We'll probably only have a couple days for attractions, so will have to be selective. I'll look around the Hill City and Lead area as I'd like to try those restaurants, maybe.

Thanks.

i'm a little late on joining in, but i wanted to add that there's agreat place to go for new year's eve, just a few miles south east of RC.  it's called Arcadia.  And it's WARM here.  the party is called Bussin 10 and there's a whole lot of fun folks waitin for the annual fudge treat from some mosquito infested northern area where it seems to age to perfection better, like grapes in Ohio Wines.  And it's WARM here.

When's the fudge gonna arrive, Gumpy??

Good to hear from you, too, Tom.   ::)   How's the better half?

Hmm, fudge. I seem to recall it's sort of like a chocolate candy. Is that right?  It's been a long time since I had any fudge!
Wonder if Cabela's has any fudge.
