I had my wheel fall off my Ford Escort last night. I heard a funny wrapping noise coming from the front wheel. Pulled over to check it out, couldn't find anything wrong. Drove a couple hundred yards to a friends place, and we couldn't find anything wrong. Concluded it was probably a CV joint going bad.

We couldn't get a flatbed into his driveway to tow it, and figured since it was 4 miles home: 1 mile on country road, 3 miles on very little traveled and easy accessible 4-lane roads, that it would be okay to "nurse" it home at slow speed, and if it broke, no big deal, just coast to the shoulder and call a truck in the morning. Cheap tow, cheap fix. Beenthere donethat.

One Problem: The CV joints are fine. It was the drivers side front lug nuts.

Yup..noise got worse, I started pulling to the side of the road as it was getting wobbly, and CRACK! The wheel went in front of on oncoming car (Who missed it thank God). My Dad and buddy came out, I found 3 of the lug nuts, jacked the car up, put the wheel on, got it home, then got it to the shop this AM (Only another 2 miles down the road), and am awaiting a damage report.Currently my Dad, Girlfriend, and mechanic are all going over my "enemies" list, but unless I was follwed into Pittsburgh into a protected parking lot where and when nobody would have expected me yesterday, then home where my Dad and I were in and out of the house, I don't see how it could have been sabotaged.

The car seems okay. It only slid about 25 feet or so. Three points to all this: One, nobody was hurt. Two, I should have listen to my inner voice and not moved the car. Also, my Dad and friend said do not overtighten the nuts. (They were lose again when I got home. These are Alloy wheels, and I know better. They need to be on there TIGHT. Alloy expands and contracts differently than steel. I've heard the arguments about wheel warpage and stripped studs, I've experienced those two issues myself, but this beats them both.) And three, ALWAYS CHECK your NUTS...

I had a wheel fall off a Range Rover once, and I don't really know why it happened either. I had stayed in a campsite for a week (vehicle parked and not used), then did an 80-mile journey during which I began to feel something was wrong, but stopped to check and could fine nothing amiss. Then on the next journey the front wheel fell off at around 40mph with almost no warning. Fortunately it stayed within the wheelwell and did little damage to the car, but the bolt holes on the expensive alloy wheel were comprehensively chewed up.

Whether the nuts had been loosened somehow I don't know, but the end result was that the studs (lugs?) sheered off. It might be significant that this was a Mk1 Range Rover fitted with a set of specially-made adapters to allow Mk3 (ie. current shape) Range Rover wheels to be fitted. I'm sure the adapters themselves were fine (tested to German TUV standards apparently), but although they had done many thousands of miles with no problem I later learned that they were supposed to have hub-rings (spigot spacers) fitted, to suit the particular wheels being used. The hub-rings are just bits of flimsy plastic, but mine didn't have any, so rather than the wheels actually seating on the hub they were just held in place by the studs.

Whether this was relevant or not to the failure I don't know, but I guess I learnt something. In my defense, I'd never come across hub-rings before - earlier Range Rovers didn't used them, but then they did have proper Land Rover axles with studs about three times larger than the BMW items the later versions are fitted with.
