My engine article has resulted in some interesting emails and phone calls.  Latest one is a fellow who wants to go from 4-stroke (3208) to 2-stroke (6V92).

I have collected many engine data sheets, but I don't have much in the way of CAT.

I did a bunch of searching tonight and with the exception of a subscription site, I can't find data sheets for either engine.

Can anyone point me to a site where I can download them.

No offense Sonnie, but the CAT site is one of the worst I have found ;)

Jim, could be that Cat wants to forget those 2 ever happen LOL but I do have some hard copies of data for those
Give me a call tomorrow at home and tell me what you need and for what model of 3208 and 3408 engine or you can go to any of the marine engine sites like Oxford and download there.

good luck

Jim,

The Cat page stumped me too until I finally realized the 3208 is classified as a pump engine, then I found all the data sheets I could ever use!

I guess they mean pump as in fire engine pumper but not sure of that.

I'm sorry to say I own a 3208 in a fire truck but try to keep it to myself!!

Hi Gus.  I have spent much of this evening poking around the CAT site and just keep getting more frustrated.  After I saw your post, I tried all kinds of different searches on the site and could not come up with anything.

Clifford, I looked for Oxford Marine and did not find a hit in Google.

Jim- going from one obsolete engine to another obsolete engine just doesn't make sense.  While external size is favorable for the two, the 6V-92TA will need about twice the cooling of the 3208, and weighs in about 500lbs more.  What would make more sense is a Cummins ISC or ISL-even though they are longer, at least they are still made and will be for the foreseeable future. Good Luck, TomC

Gus, one of the things that frustrates me is that I have some of the CAT numbers for the spec sheets (LEHM 5482, 5037, 7216, 1008).  These are for marine engines but would serve my purpose.  The CAT "search" feature will not let you search on LEHM or LEHH numbers.

TomC, I agree.  We talked a bit about some of the issues.  It caught me by surprise - so much so  that I did not think of the cooling issues.

Dallas, thanks for the link.  At least it helps on the physical size of the engine.

Try this Jim www.oya.com/others/cat3208  well forget that Jim type 3208 marine engine it will take you there. You will also find the 3408 listed as a industrial or a marine engine along with it's big sister the 3412.
The guy is not going to have a big difference in cooling the 6v92 a 3208 can look at a hill and overheat and make you wonder if you going to reach the top

Jim,

I have a very old Cat bookmark, I'll give it a whirl and see what I can come up with.

Let me repeat, I don't recommend a 3208 for anyone except for very occasional use. I think the reason they were used in fire engines is they didn't rack up much mileage and made ideal engines for AT.

Jim,

Amazingly I found my 3208 data sheets right away!! They're on the way by email.

This link takes you to the Cat engine data sheet download page. I think you will find the 3408 stuff here.

Gus, got the specs.  Thanks a ton!  I will add them to my collection.

I was surprised that the engine is rated at 2600 RPM for the industrial engine and 2800 for the pump application.

I would still like to find a spec sheet for the 3408 (could not find anything with your link Gus).  The engine is of interest to me because of the Scenicruiser I saw at Bonneville (lead picture of my engine conversion article).  Sounds like a brute of an engine, but quite thirsty.

When I was doing some searching, I found a site that has an interesting comparison of the 3208 and 6V92 in a marine setting.  It was quite a coincidence since it was the subject of another thread recently.

Did I read this right, someone wants to switch from a 6V92 to possibly a 3208...just say NO!

Oh, read it backwards...silly me.

PS Jim, a N14 is a Cummins.

Dave, a couple of folks caught that error.  My brain knows the fact, but somehow my fingers get mixed up now and then :D

When I was writing the article, I did some searching on the 3408, but did not have much luck.  Tonight I did a search using "CAT + 3408" and found lots of good stuff.    It is an 18L engine that weighs 4000 pounds!  Most trucks came with the engine rated at 470 HP.  That was a huge number back in the late '70/early '80s.  Folks say that it could quickly be turned up to 660HP.  Got terrible mileage, could beat anybody up the hill and down (Jakes not available).

Marine versions of the engine were rated up to 800 HP

I had heard a lot about them in trucks in the '80s and they were the hot rod of the time.

I only wish I could have gotten a ride in that Scenicruiser with the beefed up 3408 and 15 speed transmission!!!!

I did find a marginal quality spec sheet for the 3408, but it will do.

Thanks for all the help guys.
