Bus Purchase

I have opportunity to buy a 1972 GMC 4905, already converted. The only mechanical problem is it needs a new clutch. Can anyone till me how expensive this is and or how hard is to replace?? The price is right...Thanks....Bill

I understand that the GM series with the V drive tranny's are very easy to do.  I am told that you can pull the tranny with an engine hoist, leaving the engine in place.  I had a 4905, and never had to pull the tranny, but as much time as I spent in there, it looked pretty easy.  Good luck!

The old 4905 busses are great. We have a 1974 one that we have driven for about 9 yrs. We work out of it, so we keep it rolling. We have purchased a Dina we are converting now, so we are going to retire it. We are either going t sell it, or use what we want off of it on the new bus and have the rest hauled away. It will be sad, shes been a good one.lol

Rebuilt clutches from the local commercial clutch shop can save you a lot of money. Clutch discs fail more often than pressure plates. Dowel pins also fail. Take a good look at whats broken, you may just have a center torn out of a disc or something along that line thats not real spendy.

Hope you can get buy with a disc, that would save the exchange freight. Comm Brake should give you a deal on the core, if they don't let me know, I can throw a core off the service truck for credit for you, I have a few spares..

You may have to count the splines on the disc and get a diameter measurement, but I think they will know what you need.

I would guess you will spend less than $400 for parts even if you need everything, use your business name if you can. (Tell them No tax to out of state buyers).

Isn't the clutch in the 4905 a wet clutch?
