4905 trans oil level ?

I have a 4905 with a standard transmission, do you check the transmission oil level with the engine running, or with it stopped Thank you for your input, Bill.

Per the maintenance manual the engine must be stopped/shut down.
Note: The transmission uses the same oil as the engine.

Thanks for help, I was alittle worried when I checked it running and there was no oil on the stick, but with it shut down it was showing almost full.
