The book says (actually I have the maint on disc, which is very hard to read) says 10W-40 oil. Is this really true? What are you guys out there using?

Thanks

Yes, sorta?   Some power steering systems call for 10W-40 and some call for ATF.  I do not which call for what?  Our MC-8, which has OEM hydraulic assist, had ATF in it when we got it so that is what we have used.  We are hoping to install an integral sterring in a couple weeks and was told to run 10W40 in it.  Jack

I have been using 10w40 for five years with no problem. My manual says the same as yours.

Some use the same oil they use in the engine in case the seal goes out in the power stearing pump.

All of these systems are parasitic drains on power and MPG.  Pure synthetic is the best lube and thinnest oil.  If it is within your reach price wise, I can't see using anything else.

Simple- if it is red, it is ATF.  If it is brownish, it is 15W-40 engine oil.  Highly recommend you NOT use straight 40 weight, since if you get into cold weather, you risk possible pump damage from thick oil. Good Luck, TomC
