When I turn off my rig sometimes it takes about 30 seconds to actually shut down... and it sounds horrid! What is going on?

First, explain "sounds horrid".

Second, assuming this is a non-DDEC engine.
I've had lengthy shutdowns when the shutdown cylinder starts to get gummed up. Can also happen when the air valve that activates the shutdown cylinder starts sticking.

Suggest you try shutting down the engine manually, and see if it does the same. Also use the rear panel shutdown and watch the action of the shutdown cylinder and see
if it's sluggish.

As Craig said check and make sure it is going to full kill at the gov.

You said it sounds horrid, does it smoke when you kill it. if not You may need to have some one take a look see at the gov. settings and the link rods and pins, if you go this way this would be the time for a good tune up.

Hope this helps

The same thing happend on my 671/4104, it was the skinner valve. Is there a skinner on the 8v92 turbo?

are you fully aired up when you try to shut it down?? You need to have good air pressure to activate the fuel kill lever
I will drive my Detroit hard... I will drive my Detroit hard.

My shutdown solenoid was sticky about a year ago.  I blasted it with whatever weasel piss I happened to have at the time and blasted it regularly for a couple of weeks.  It hasn't recurred.

The last thing I would ever want to do is hurt you.
Its the last thing but its still on the list.

Just to be sure,
92's don't have emergency shutdowns, but what you're describing sounds exactly like the emergency shutdown is activated to me.
