Looking through my Allison 740 manual, I can't find (or am overlooking) the torque specs for the transmission to bellhousing bolts and for the flex plate to torque converter bolts.  Can anyone help?  Thanks in advance,  Jack

Hi Jack,

Last summer I took out the 8V71 & 4sp Spicer out of our GMC 4905.  Put in a 6V92 & V730.

I know this is not the same transmission as yours, but for what it's worth.....

Per the Universal Coach Parts V730 Conversion Manual, the flex plate coupling to engine flywheel got torqued 12-16 ft. lbs.
Per the Allison V730 Mechanics Manuel (MT1494EN) the bolts holding the transmission to engine bell housing get 26-32 ft. lbs.

Hope that helps you make a decision if nobody can find your transmission torque specs.

Good luck

Thanks Chris,
I just looked in one of my shop reference manuals and came up with the following: The bellhousing bolts are grade 5  7/16-14, the chart shows a torque for these bolts of 50 dry & 35 lubricated.   The flex plate to torque converter bolts are grade 8  1/2-20, the same chart shows a torque for these bolts of 120 dry and 90 lubricated. What would be the lubricant used to achieve the lubricated specs?  Jack

Hello:
Check the Allison website for publication MT1366EN   mechanics tips for 700 series on highway transmissions.  It is a free download. Page 43 gives all the torque specs.
This publication details instructions for the mechanic to correctly install a 700 series transmission .
CLean engine oil used very lightly on threads will suffice as a lubricant but it should not be dripping. Used sparingly...
