With a little luck we will be on the road more. What type of MPG can I expect from my MCI 9 with 8v92T/750 Allison?

Thanks

John

If you plan your trip at 5 MPG you will never be disappointed LOL ;D

The mileage on a 8v92 is going to depend on your engine setup, weight, gearing and driving habits, mine is set on 475hp and 3:36 gearing  I  weigh 41,350# and drive between 1500 and 1800 Rpm where the 8V92 is designed to run and on a 3500 mile trip I averaged 7.3 with generator time included. They get good fuel mileage if setup right and a couple of guys on this board know how to do it  Don Fairchild for one, it gets down to fuel and air if you have black smoke the average is going to be around 5mpg     good luck

John, what speed does your coach top out at, and do you know at what RPM?

That'll give the gurus something to at least ballpark for you.

happy coaching!

Our 8V71 is getting tired (being replaced this spring with a fresh, higher HP 8V71) and our mileage has slipped. We are getting between 10 & 11 .  About 5.5 on the highway and about 5.2 in town. That adds up to 10.7, isn't that the way MPG is figgered?   LOL  Actually, I think part of the decrease in mileage is due to the new ULSD.  I have had several people tell me their mileage has dropped since using ULSD.  Jack

Here's another way to help your mileage Jack - figger it in Canuckian gallons.

I brought my mileage spreadsheet up to date last night.  The two tanks since the famous rebuild ran 8.11 & 7.57 to the Canuck gallon.  (to convert to MPG(US) multiply by 0.83).  Those figures are typical for what I got pre-rebuild or maybe slightly better, its really too little information to draw any conclusion from.  The 7.57 is particularly interesting since it included running with the big dogs on I-95 & I-4.  My GPS is set to kilometres & I'll leave the conversion to you but it was showing over 130 kph except for when we were doing the parking lot thing.  If that mileage holds then it will be a considerable improvement over what we used to get.

We are new to all this and  have only had our bus 4 months. We have MC-7, 8V-71 and Allison MT 654 (5 speed auto). When we drove from Texas to Nevada via the northern route we drove around 1,500 miles and averaged 6.9 mpg.

I didn't have a tach then and wanted to get as good of mpg as I could so I drove at 60 mph. That put me in 4th gear with the engine reved up to the governor. Since then, I have installed a tach and I see that the engine is governed at 2300 so that was what I was doing. We haven't made many long trips since the tach was installed but we did go about 300 miles pulling a jeep toad over Donner into Sacramento. We only got 5.4 mpg on that trip but we went over numerous grades. The fun part was my son-in-law had installed a Jake brake so downhill was more enjoyable than the trip from Texas.

I plan to drive in 5th gear on our next trip at around 2000 rpm, and expect that will put me around 65 mph. I see many folks recommending the 1800 rpm range which should put me back at 60 mph so I am very curious what mpg I will get at the two different rpm's. I doubt I will get over 7 mpg but it sure would be nice. The wife doesn't appreciate it as much as I do, but in 5th gear I can actually go over the speed limit on the interstate, it will cruise along at around 75 but she can hear the fuel being sucked out of the tank and catches me everytime I try it.

I'm a bit surprised that folks are getting close to 8 MPG with 8V92s.

My Dina with Series 60 and B500 gets 7.8 to 8 MPG on the highway at 65 MPH.  My bus does weigh close to 40,000 lbs when loaded for a trip.  My last trip of 4,000 miles we averaged about 7.8 MPG, but that included some 20 to 40 hours of generator time.  Generator excluded would probably push me to 8 MPG.

John -

There's an awful lot of truth in PP's statement above.  Think about it.

I for one am not surprised about the mileage on a 8v92 a Newell I owned had a DDEC 500 HP with the B500 Allison and it would average over 8 mpg and was over 40,000#.The coach I own now has a Volvo D13 515 HP and will average 4.8 to 5.1 at best with a tail wind.

youknowwho

The last time I was able to accurately check my fuel mileage I was getting 5.8 to 6.2 then had some electrical glitches so my speedo didn't work for a while. But I did drive the last 2500 miles on less than 100 gallons of diesel fuel and that includes running my diesel thirsty Wabesto as needed for hot water and very little heat for 3 months.

I will be using my pro-link to see what I have been getting the last couple of trips! I have neglected to check mileage manually only because the 230 gallon tank was full and mpg just doesn't matter that much as long as there are no major problems elsewhere and so far so good!
I will post what my pro-link tells me!
