Very funny ways of make believe.

One thing that image will last a long time, create bumper traffic and DOT's phone will be tie up.

Later, many driver will plan alternative route. Now less traffic & noise.

In Michigan, we actually use the real thing to control traffic.  Less driving, saves fuel, slows cars etc.

I think it's got potential to do both. Sure, you may try to straddle the "hole" as best you can, but that subcompact with tiny wheels may decide the hole in your lane is smaller and swerve in front of you while slamming on the brakes.

I saw those in a news story a few months ago.  According to that article several jurisdictions were testing them and pretty proud of the results. It seems pretty dangerous to me due to the panic factor.

Back in the 80's I encountered one that I wish would have just been an image.  I was going through Missouri in my Firebird.  They had resurfaced the highway recently but were "done".  No constructions signs or workers.  even the stripes had already been put down.  But they had left a 4' gap the one layer deep (6"?) the full width of the lane.  I hit that at about 70mph and it felt kind of like a Dukes of Hazard situation.  I can't imagine the mentaility it would take to call that road project "done".

I can see one panic stop causing a big ol mess of a multi car pile up and a bigger mess of a civil case against whomever put it there. I see it all the time when a driver stops quick and the person behind either isn't paying attention or is just following too close and/or too fast. Yikes! And the person at fault will try to blame everything else but there own actions. "The decal caused the crash...if it wasn't there I wouldn't have hit them". Big liability to the folks who put it down.

It would seem to depend on where you put them.  Obviously, if you put them on a 70mph highway, your going to have problems.  They may work very well in places where cars are expected to be slow--school zones, residential streets, near road construction.

Oh yeah. We use'em here in North Carolina too.  But the suckers won't peel off. They are real. 
It still doesn't slow traffic.  We just dodge'em.
