There was actually a human-interest piece on the TV news here not long ago about the bizarre habit that some American truckers had of allowing their engines to idle for long periods whilst parked up, and how it was indicative of how the concept of fuel economy & emissions reduction just hadn't yet caught on yet. I realise there are sometimes good reasons to do it (extreme cold temperature etc), but it is something which you would simply never see here. Quite a few new cars here (VWs and the diesel Mini etc) actually turn the engine off when you come to a stop, and automatically start it again when you press the accelerator pedal to drive off.

A shameless plug for my business - visit www.magazineexchange.co.uk for back issue magazines - thousands of titles covering cars, motorbikes, aircraft, railways, boats, modelling etc. You'll find lots of interest, although not much covering American buses sadly.

The only laws I enforce were when my kids were attempting to grow up.. They survived, but one of them will not ever shoplift again.

Oh, and the other law that adult beverages should be served ice cold.

Well, it IS pretty obvious that it's Dallas's fault!  NO idlers!  Does that mean that we can no longer sit either?  :) :) :)

This won't apply if you have a new bus with the idle approved engines with low nox.  Good Luck, TomC

That law was passed with the help of strong religious support that declared, "The idling truck is the Devil's playground."
You don't have to believe everything you think.

It just shows how messed up I am that when I read the title of this post, I thought of a bus buddy instead of a major city. . . a city that's not even that far down the road from us.

Dallas, I bet you figured I just never thought about you. . .little did you know, ha ha.  Christy Hicks

They picked a good day to inforce the new law....

Cause most of the Owner Operators will be "ENGINE OFF" anyway!

Isn't April 1st the D-Day for a strike?

But Tom, don't all diesel engines have nox? It's the side effect of being compression ignition engines, while spark ignition engines have pings.  ;D  ::)

We came back up 95 thru Nevada last week and heard the truckers talking about a friend who just paid $300 for letting his truck idle for more than 10 minutes at a rest area i California. We spent the nite in a rest area just south of Susanville, Ca and sure enough all the trucks had reasonbly quiet inverter generators. I slept good. The cops made regular rounds. I'm so happy to see this happen.
