This sort of started on another thread, but rather than highjack that one, i will start a new one. Now i am not that well traveled, yet,,, but my daughter said she wanted to take a winter vacation in the bus. I asked her where she wanted to go and she said "far enough south so i can go swimming"! And she is talking about in a natural body of water,,, not a pool.

So my first thought is to just jump on I-35 and make tracks down south. Heck, we up here think anything south of Kansas City is all tropics anyway! Well maybe not this year! The weather down there looks the same as our winter weather.

My daughter would perhaps like to spend some time in Louisiana trying to find some nice local music! Then cross over into TX. I think the girls right now are planning to fly back home from Houston.

So, question - If we get down to the McAllen area by the Rio Grande will it normally be warm enough down there? I have never been along the Rio Grande and would like to see that area. Do any of you have any places that you like,,, or places to avoid?

Or would we be better off to just head west into the AZ desert? We are bringing the bicycles, the girls are bringing roller blades,,, we want a few days of summer i guess.

The girls only have about 9 days, so i want to get them into the heat as quick as i can. Any suggestions and tips will be appreciated.

John, the weather in Mc Allen in Feb will be in the mid 70s in the day and in the 50s at night Padre will be a few degrees warmer. little rain in Feb driest month of the year in Houston (about 1in) and a breeze of 5 to 10 miles per hour in the Valley. Our friends that live at Mc Allen told us the wind has been terrible this year in the Valley. But Feb is always nice most of the time.  .John sorry about giving you the info for Feb should have read your post better but anyway Dec and Jan are the coldest months of the year in Texas the best part is the cold will only last only for a few days then it warms back up. Man I have got to leave this Miller Lite alone when trying to post you did say Feb

John Z

Thanks for the info, it is just what i was looking for! We will be leaving up here mid-Feb and heading down there. I sure could go for some of that heat right about now. I want this vacation to work out good for my daughter since this is her last year in high school, and who knows, this may be my last chance to vacation with her.

John, if the girls are going to fly out of Houston try to get a flight  departing from Hobby Airport it's on the south side of Houston and Bush is on the north side. Hobby is easier to to access than Bush Intl I know Southwest has a terminal at Hobby

John Z

Actually we were just exchanging im's talking about this trip. We were wondering if the girls could fly back from Corpus Christi, as we want to hang out in the heat for another week or so before we head back. Of course all these plans are subject to change. Thanks again for the help!

John, if you will call 1-800-452-9292 Monday they will mail you a travel guide for the state and will tell you where and what town has free camping as they are every place in small towns in Texas till you get close to the Metro areas.

John Z

Thanks for the number. I will call them Monday for sure. That might help us decide what area we want to stop in. None of us have been in that area before.

I don't know. I'm headin to Fla. to try and stay warm but my friends in Live Oak are saying its been in the 20's......I was looking for 60's-70's........lol...I think its a cold winter.......Stock up on propane and long johns.

michal, its 72 degrees in McAllen   Live Oak is 250 miles north of McAllen

Hey Michal. Boy you never know what the weather is going to be anymore! I guess we will have to fly by the seat of our pants this Feb. We will pause at Kansas City and chk the weather maps, and decide if we veer east or west at that time. Long johns we got, but am hoping to get more wear out of a pair of shorts and bike shirts. As for propane i am trying to burn up all that is left in my tank. Am down to about 4 gallons left. I have been using it up when i work out there for heat. I want to remove the main valve on the tank to be repaired or replaced, as i suspect a small leak in it.
