Thats why I finally settled on a propane furnace. Maintenance costs. More components to have problems, and with insane diesel prices now which convinced me to pass. Yes, I will have to carry an additional fuel, but have room for two 30 or 40 lb tanks in other bay. Also, I found Suburban makes a vertical furnace model, basically the standard one that sits on its side, which I purchased. Going into a/c bay after sectioning off space. The factory duct connections are already there, floor vent for return air to it and sealing area from outside.

I have never had any fear going with propane appliances either John and never had any problems with it, around here propane is $2.10 a gal and diesel is $4.99

Currently was little less than 17 bucks to fill 5 lb tank at TSC yesterday. About 4 4 gallons per tank.

Wasn't a 5 gal tank but I had the tank filled at Rimrock it was $380.00 for 200 gals no taxes since it was for home use and a stationary tank

In Tok AK all last summer diesel fuel got as high as $6+/gal. LP stayed steady at $3.50/gal. We burnt diesel in the two CDHs more for a test but wasn't the wise economical choice. We have redundancy with either or both diesel &/or LP heat. The two CDHs permanantly installed in the bus plus a new replacement unit stored in original box, a stand alone portable CDH and spare parts to rebuild any two CDH all for under $600. As said they are very reliable, and economical to run & service. They are also very efficient in battery draw: CDH - under 2A(after initial glow plug start). LP forced air furnace - approx. 8A draw. Our oldest vintage reliable is a 1973 Empire LP radiant furnace, no 12VDC @ 15kbtu old fashion pilot light. :^

Filling the 40lb tanks has gotten to be expensive because of the labor, and the rip off of tank exchange, propane at KOA was 5 bucks a gal last year a 4 mile drive to a propane dealer it was 2 bucks a gal

A separate tank for stove oil/heating oil or off road diesel can lighten the financial burden somewhat.

The burners will burn cleanest on furnace oil.

Fwiw, the first propane delivery shows my Dad's supplier holding the line, same 99 cents a litre delivered as last winter in Eastern Ontario.

Happy coaching!
