My 1986 MCI102A3 just broke down heading down I-5.

The blower gearbox that runs the squirrel fans for the radiators has siezed up.  I can't seem to find one anywhere, MCI parts doesn't have them in stock.

Looking for someone who knows where I can get one or has an MCI102 (or comparable) that they are parting out.

Help me get moving again!  :)

Thanks

Hi;

    need to know about where on I-5 you are. I-5 is a long hiway.

Lack of lube?

Has it loosened up now that it has cooled?

If it moves now, fill with oil and move out?

That is not a pleasant task, very close tolerances to get the assembly out and in, and up there. Build a good scaffold, with a toe board at back so you don't step/slip off...

Happy coaching!

It was because of a failure on my part to check the oil, but it's pretty much toasted now.  Big grindy sounds that broke the belt which is what made us realize things had gone South.

And speaking of South, we are on I-5 near Bakersfield.

I hope you have a tow service coverage plan because it is not likely this will be a roadside repair. Another factor is all the fires going on. You don't want to be caught in one without the ability to move.

Ain't no fires around Bakersfield, nothing to burn.  Try a charter bus outfit, like Storer Coachways in Modesto.  Better yet, call Transit Sales International in Riverside county, they have tons of MCI parts.  Correction, I meant Complete Coach Works, the sister company next door.  They will have what you need.  HTH

I know Storer Coachways because we live in SF - but I'm pretty sure they don't have anything nearly as old as a 102A3...  Do you have reason to believe they'd have parts for an old 80's bus?

I'll call Complete Coach Works.  I would *love* to find a company that has parts buses for anything I can't find from Luke.

Only because bus companies (I owned one) tend to have a hard time throwing away serviceable parts and often times have them laying around.  Yes, Storer is running new equipment but they might have something around or know who does.  Complete Coach Works would be a good bet.  They have or did have a shop at the old Alemeda Air Station too.

Right about that! When we had our ACF Brill many years ago, we stopped in Lancaster, Pa. at Conestoga Transportation Company. I asked the parts guy there if he might have any ignition parts yet, since they hadn't run Brills for 20 years. He took me down into a dark cellar into a back room with dusty shelves with a few items laying on them yet. He had a nos unobtanium distributor cap, couple of condensers and rotors. $20.00 for all. Just got lucky. Nobody wants to mess with cleaning out the old parts areas, or be responsible for discarding the wrong thing.
