Front and rear caps on MCI

You may have figured out by now that I am not the brightest penny in the box but last night while putting lamanet on the walls I finally noticed ( because I was measuring for fit) that the original front and rear caps are still there with the newer style caps on the outside. Single riveted in.

   Is this Common? should I care?

Since the roof is holding up the front of the bus, there has to be a lot of structural engineering in the roof design.  Rather than cut off the old roof structure and build a new one, a lot of people just put on a cap for cosmetic reason.

I have a R&M rear cap only and I installed it over the orriginal cap with ease. My theroy was to not

inheret any water leaks. So far not a leak in sight. Plus the orriginal cap has reinforced the R&M cap

keeping it stable..

What you have is pretty common.  My rear cap is installed over the old cap.  Works fine...but it makes for a joint that has to be dealt with...or ignored, as I've done so far. 
Depending on your front cap's design, it may be OK either way.  My NJT has such a tall cap that it, and the steel that supported it, had to be removed.   I rewelded new steel into the bus once the cap was located. 
Either way works.  Rear R&M caps are know to leak around the light fixtures....so covering the old cap may be a better idea....at least on the rear. 
The advantage of replacement of a rear cap is a little extra cubic feet of storage in the cap, and the opportunity to install the cap under the roof panels.
