LA county, bought a lot of MCI commuter buses a few years ago and used the bays to fill with compressed natural gas CNG. They had almost an 800 mile range. I had a CNG truck it was so clean there was no smoging required and the CHP okayd them for the diamond lane, i have seen blubird cng buses for sale, but you have to replace the tanks at 15 years, back then, lvmci...

I'm guessing maybe you could have the tanks re-certifiied.

Regenerative braking is definitely a thing on buses. In fact, sometimes those units are recycled to be used as automotive dynos. I've even see setups where they used the axle and dualies as the rollers for a chassis dyno. Wild stuff.
