Is the starter on a 8V71 12v Left rotation & 12v Right rotation wound in the same direction.
The part #s for a V drive & a T drive seem to be the same as far as the armatures go.
The splines are straight not spiraled as on a dedicated rotation armature.

On auto type starters you can change rotation by clocking the brush holder to a different slot on the case.  I am fairly  sure that the same holds true on any DC starter or motor. You are changeing the relation of the brushes vs the field.

But remember - the clutch on the starter gear has to ratchets in the opposite direction
