I use Delo 100 40w and on the trip just completed from Vancouver BC to Quartzite and back I used a gallon and a half in 1,600 miles. The 871 has only 45,000 miles on an out of frame. Leaks a little but I get very little on the Corvair towed.
I've been told I should use some Lucas oil conditioner, any thoughts on it, ??

Pay close attention to what Paul said about filling to the oil Full mark, that is not advisable on any engine I have ever owned from airplanes to heavy trucks and the two buses.

Every airplane I've owned will throw out the first quart in 20 min then settle down to normal consumption. Most of my vehicles do the same thing but not as fast.

Yep I have a 182 that will do this every time and maybe a quart and a half.

Change your oil and run the piss out of it. You have a muffler full of fuel and oil in my opinion.

I also have a 1982 MCI9 with the 6V92...I use Rottela T 40w CH2 for two stroke engines, it works great but does smoke on start up and under excellaration-I've been told that's typical behavior.
I think the advise is very sound that you are getting.  Your Decision and your Green Backs$$$
