I'm looking at buying Eric B's MT654 that was mated to an 8V71 to install in my MC-5 with 8V71. The research that I've done here indicates that the 654 will fit in the MC-5 mated to an 8V71. Do you know of any circumstances where that combination would not fit? I expect to have the drive shaft shortened probably.

My 5 A has the 644 and an 8V71, and my driveline is pretty short. According to the sheet that i have on the 644 and the 654, the 654 is almost 6 inches longer. The other measurements are the same. Maybe somebody here has a 5A with a 654 behind an 8v71? I think it might be a tight fit.
Used to own a 1968 MCI 5A and a 1977 5C.

I don't think it will fit.  I think only the 4 speed 640 type will fit.

I never could make a 654 work in a 5 only the 644 when you add the drop down on the bellhousing they don't fit if you change to a # 2 bellhousing it may work but finding a # 2 housing for a MCI almost impossible you need to keep the right angle or it will beat a drop box out of the 5

good luck

Oh yah I forgot the 644 is probably the one I need. I better check the dimensions of each.
Thanks.

We have a 6V-71 with a MT-654 in our MC 5C  but a 8V won't fit with it.

Dave-I would pull that 6V-71 (must be really slow up the hills) and install a 6V-92TA since both externally are exactly the same.  Or turboing a 6V-71 you can get 300hp and 900lb/ft torque.  Makes a big difference from 238hp and 600lb/ft torque.  Good Luck, TomC
