How do I connect the starter on my house generator to the battery?

I don't know what the problem is here hooking the generator up just takes a + battery cable on the starter and a ground to make it work and I am pretty sure that unit has to have a separate battery the ones I have been around cannot be tied to another system with out the diode pack they sell for 250 bucks and Honda sells a remote start for those also, you have to be careful with a Honda the control boards are not el cheapo lol
