Is there any reason  I can't change the front crank seal on an 8V71 without removing the front cover?  manual says remove front cover, which I really would rather not do.  Seems to be lots of room and it fits from the outside, once the spacer is removed.

I found in the manual that you can change the front seal without taking the cover off except for front covers with trunnion mounts.  What is a front cover with a trunnion mount, and why can't you change the front seal on them?

When I overhauled my 4-71, I changed the front seal without removing the front cover IIRC. Why don't you try it. You got nothing to loose. If it doesn't work, then remove the cover.
