It's finished!  I've had a chance to go to the race track with the car and car trailer, two weekends at a campground, and several day trips.

Here's a short video of the the engine actually installed and bolted in.

One minor issue was that the heater hose didn't line up.  That took 5 hours to get right!!!

Cleaned up all the wires, removed all the butt connectors and soldered/heat shrink wrapped every connection..

Here's a second clip (really short) of the first cold startup, airup and back out......BUT, my camera ran out of memory so its only the startup.

New Engine Start Up

And the end results...  a happy bus, filled with kids and at the camp ground!

Congratulations!!! Very sweet sounding

No only is it sweet sounding, what a pleasure it is to drive now!  The new clutch must make it easier to shift (as does using the Jake Brakes on "Low" between shifts), and the new power and torque make all the difference driving this bus!  I'm willing to bet my fuel mileage increases.  I find that I'm just feathering the throttle while cruising.  That was definitely no the case with the old, worn out engine with N60 injectors.  This new engine has N65s, A timing and a 2450rpm no load setting.

Whoa.

Just need to make a Donaldson 5" in 5" out muffler (that's not too loud) fit in the space of my newly acquired OEM Nelson muffler (which is super quiet but chokes it significantly with it's 3.5" outlet).  More on that later... I'm going to do some testing with the OEM muffler, 4"in 4"out Donaldson (which I have used for a couple years), a 5" 5" Donaldson (like TomC is using) and my non-stealth 5" straight through pipe (omg loud, but tons more power).

Nice!  Always good to have a fresh engine.
I'm very pleased with my 5" both sides in and out-puts out a nice tone, but not too noisy.  I think you'd find that to be the closest thing to a straight pipe performance, but still a muffler.  I wouldn't even fool with any of the other mufflers.  Good Luck, TomC

TomC,

I'm hoping that 5" in/out same side muffler will fit in the engine bay.  I have the 4" in/out muffler that fits in without any trouble.  I don't mind a bit more noise, but as the driver it's not nearly as bothersome.

This weekend a took the bus on it's first long distance test run.  I did 300 miles up to the top of Vermont and 12 hours later drove 300 miles back.  I drove overnight and the engine temps were a bit high.  On the way back, with outside temps around 80, the temps got too high for my liking.  I never checked the thermostats in the replacement engine.  I'm going to take the 170 degree thermostats from the old engine (which had about 10k miles on them) and put them in the new engine.  I never saw temps over 190 with the old engine.

BTW, at 70 to 75 mph, burning up every hill I saw, only needing to down shift once (and she still held 60 mph in third going up it), I averaged 8.2mpg.  I could get 10.8 mpg at 65 mph with the old engine.  And this was with the OEM muffler.  The 4" will get better mileage, the 5" straight through pipe is even better yet mileage wise.
