How do you check it?  I thought it shared the fluid with the diff, but my manual is very unclear on this.

i have a 1961 flxible hi-level with a drop box. there is a plug in the side of the drop boxhousing, which is about half way up the side. remove the plug and see if there is any fluid coming out. you should be able to touch the levelwith your little finger bent into the hole. yes the drop box and the diff. are all together as one unit. hope this helps    frank-0

Brian, on the left side (drivers side) of the drop box there is a plug , and it looks more like some sort of adjustment gizmo..so it's misleading. Simply remove that plug and start squirting the GO90 into the rascal.

The drop box is easier to get fluids into than the tranny. That takes some patience, unless of course if you have a pit available.

I learned my lesson this year. Each autumn before I head south I have a guy with a pit just 15 miles south of me and I will take the bus there for a day and have sall the underneath lubed and checked before I leave.

I can usually hear if the drop box is a little low on oil...they're straight cut gears and will tell
you if you listen closely on the road.

Brian, Same oil. But the plug is on the Dif, not the dropbox I think. But will go look. Figure normal level in the Dif, there should be a plug. These boxes were made to carry the oil up and around to the bearings and gears.  Tom Y

Brian, Plug on dif on drivers side. Just below half way.  Tom Y

When checking any diff or manual transmission, the oil should be at the filler level-NOT where you can reach it with a bent finger.  A finger length down can meant a half gallon or more of extra oil you'd be missing.  Don't ask how I know. Good Luck, TomC

So it's for sure that the drop box shares the fluid with the diff?  And that since I just had the diff fluid changed the drop box fluid is changed as well?

The drop box shares lubricant with the differential as well as the axle bearings. One easy place to fill...one helluva lot of volume to lubricate all that needs it.
