inside linner of side walls?

why did they use Masonite inside bus walls ;as a liner rather than plywood?. just curious was going to replace with plywood.but should I reconsider..?? Moisture barrier??

Tempered masonite is marketed as "a tough, high-density hardboard with superior strength and resistance to impact and water absorption. It can be used as stage flooring, wet area wall linings, exterior doors, bench surfaces, boat building and signage."

I'd guess it was used because of a better cost vs performance than plywood.
It held up well in my bus - until the roof leaks eventually beat it into submission.  

It also has no grain, so it it can be used in any direction . . .

so it sounds like there is no need to cover it with plywood..save some bucks there..will just replace damaged area with same...could definitely see moisture barrier valve...Thanks Bob
