8V71 tune and other thoughts

Spending some quality time with my bus today, I determined that I have an 8V71N with N65 injectors (with brown labels if that makes a difference), set at a low 1.460" (by low I mean a few thou under, or loose), and probably standard timing.  It doesn't smoke under power, even when at full throttle and about to downshift to third on a hill.  What might I gain by setting the injectors to 1.484, or another perhaps more aggressive tune?

When I took the valve cover off I was very impressed with how clean it was under there, could have been built yesterday.  When I pulled the air box covers off, the grids on the covers were covered with very gritty detrius.  I suspect the total lack of oil in the air cleaners has put dirty air in this thing and it's dusted.  Oh well.  I also pulled a chunk of liner out, about 3/4" diameter, from the air intakes.  The engine has been in-framed or rebuilt at some point, and someone left a chunk for me to find.  The things you find in a Detroit...

At this point in the market, would you do an inframe or would you look for a used engine to install?  How would you decide?  http://craiglook.com/all.html?q=8V-71

Thanks, Brian

My personal feeling is: if you can do an overhaul yourself, it would be the best. You then know what you have. I did that on my 4-71 a year ago. I now have 16000 kms (10000miles) on it, and it runs so well and smooth and sweet, it makes me feel like it was worth it. It takes time, but it isn't really hard to do. You'll always take your chances on a used one.

your a car guy..just ask yourself....is this the bus I will keep forever....do I want a bigger engine? if you do it your self you will know the mechanic to complain to....how much do I want to invest in this bus...so you like your ride then make it happy and yourself more at ease..Questions I would ask myself...Bob
