mounting roof air in spare tire compartment??? dumb?

Ok, I had a thought a few moments ago while researching split air conditioner systems. I have a split in the back of the bus and I am itching to get that ugly thing off my roof.

Could I simply mount the AC unit upside down in the Spare tire compartment and push the fresh air up my skirt in the drivers seat?

Maybe mount it the proper way and run a duct around??? thoughts?  A pretty cheap solution and I am not using that space anyway???

No, the short answer is the compressor will not allow it.

I don't see how you could pull this off successfully. Evaporators and condensers require a lot of air flow and you don't have the room to make it happen. It would be easier to fabricate an engine automotive AC system.

Have had same thoughts;but need spare tire for those times when you need to change yourself..or don't need to pay 400 dollars for used tire on road..that aside ..I mounted 14700 btu window air is bay (2) and used wire chase across front axle hump to deliver air to drivers area...didn't notice what model of bus you have but have done on mci 8 and prev xl. need more info? will be stacking and doing on new project also.

not sure of 5a but used ac compartment on drivers side of 8 for ac's then ducted to chase from there to both front and rear.use floor grates for return air thru bays..use small ceiling fan to push heat down from roof..also fan is a 24" from lowes,mounted above drivers seat :sure feels good blowing down on you going down road and takes heat to floor to mix with cold air..

I don't have any idea about mounting a roof air in the spare tire compartment but I have 2 Crusiair units in mine.
I have never carried a spare and never had a need for one.

I am going to mount two roof airs in my basement in my truck conversion.  I have researched and determined that the best roof air to use is the low profile Duotherm Penguin.  Reasons- the condenser uses a squirrel cage blower that can be ducted outside; it is low profile so not to take too much room; can be ordered as a ducted unit with remote thermostat; if something goes wrong with the unit, many know how to work on it (compared to a Cruiseair, as example); if it totally goes south, just replace with a new unit that are readily available (around $900.00-as compared to around $2,200.00 for a Cruiseair).  Most other roof top airs would need too much ducting of the condenser air to make it work.  And one things for sure, you cannot turn a roof top air upside down because of oil flow of the compressor.  Good Luck, TomC

Interesting, I have two roof air units and have nothing to loose by giving it a try (not upside down though) If it all falls apart than aother split unit may be in my future. either way.... I hate roof AC units - makes my bus look like an RV
