There's also a good recording on the Pacific Bus Museum's web site, a 6-71 starting up.

Now, does anyone know how to turn one of these into a cellphone ringtone?

Depending on your ringer output format for your phone this may help.

First you need to make sure that you have the sound you want in the proper quality and length on your drive and then run it through this:

http://www.media-convert.com/

By the way, I use this to convert files from Youtube and save onto my machine, first paste the link in here:

http://www.videodl.org/

...and download which saves it in flash (.flv format) and then point the media-convert to the flv file and convert it and save as a movie format.

......if anyone cares, may be useful to someone besides me.

Actually, the best 2-stroke Detroits sounds came from the old narrow cab American LaFrance fire engines and ladder trucks equippped with the 318 bumped up to the fire service specs 350 employing N90 injectors and about 2500 rpm along with the older manual Fuller T-905 trannies.  Very sweet music rowing thru the gears.  Practically no mufflers. You could be resting in your rack in the dorm and easily hear neighboring apparatus responding to various calls well over a mile away on a still nite.  Long ago and far away.  Broom....  broooommmmm.......  BROOOWMMMMMM!!!  He he he.  MORE RED WINE!!  :) :) :)

The DD series 60, in the 102D3 of our hockey team's, is the most awfull sounding thing ever invented. Its smooth, awsome power and torque thankfully make up for that sickly, abominable sound.

The 4-71T in my Courier 96 is indeed sweet melody by comparison. The lope at iddle for the first couple minutes after start up always brings a smile to my face.

Oh... to have that as a ring tone on my cell...

Reminiscent of the Indiana Jones movie, the guy waving the sword and getting fancy - Jones shoots him.  I spent about an hour (business is slow) trying the conversion packages Paladin mentioned, with no luck.  Searching for ring tone conversion, one thing led to another, and I saw the idea about recording the sound directly into the phone.

Held the Treo 650 up to the computer speaker, and recorded the sound directly into the phone.  Not the greatest quality, but I may not use it long-term anyway.  I'd hoped to be able to assign it to certain numbers (wife, etc.) - but Treo seems to assign rings to all known, or all unknown numbers.  An old friend has a phone that had a horror scream as its ring, only funny the first time.  I can see me sitting with a client, and having a 6-71 start up on my hip.  Even in the bus business, that may be a little too much.  Fun for now, though.

Paladin, thanks for the references.

I have some 6-71 MP3's that I use for ringtones if anyone wants them.

I would also be glad to take your favorite sound and convert it to a ringtone. Just send it via my email. Make the recording 30 second or less. You might also include what format your phone uses, or at least what brand and model of phone.
