You'd think that wouldn't be so hard to have a left hand version. What about other suppliers beside the OEM starter manufacturer?
Or are older DETROITS designed in such a way that only certain starters will work?

I haven't found anyone that makes the reduction starter for the left handed Detroit Diesel there is not a need for one about the only people with a left hand engine is the GM crowd,so the market wouldn't be good for manufactures. It would be nice for the GM people though because the starter on a 8v71 in a GM bus is a bitch to change

As I was removing the starter I noticed that the bottom nut was VERY loose.Wonder if that contributed to the problem.

Fred.

An 8v-71 doesn't need a gear reduction starter. Since they will normally start with 1/4 turn of the engine, just get a proper rebuild or new replacement. Could be up to 50 years old with thousands of starts.

Cat,Detroit or Cummins don't need a reduction starter either but they are a nice choice over a heavy direct drive starter and you can buy one new cheaper that you can have a 42 rebuilt

I have replaced my starter twice and both times my rebuilds had the starter on his shelf.   8V71 on a 4106.   20 miles south of Lansing, Mi.
