Route 66 to Lincoln Highway to Highway 1 then south to ....

There are some surprising grades just out of SD on I15 way before you deal with Cajon pass, which isn't too bad. (I was just there) This puts you into the middle of the desert at Barstow and Needles, hot, then you have to climb to Flagstaff, AZ, Elevation 6900'. so obviously there are more grades to climb to get there. Then, up to Gallup, NM, elev 6500'.

I-26 goes to 80 above Johnson City, TN if you want to avoid the harsh 40 section.
