I'm having some trouble reading the date code on one of the steer tires that came on my bus. I've already replaced it obviously but am interested in just how old it was. The previous owner supposedly drove it 800 miles on this tire two years ago. My best guess is the 24th week of '91 but that code isn't anywhere near the DOT lettering and from what I can tell they didn't switch to 4 digit codes until 2000. I was told the other steer popped along the way and was replaced at a truck stop...

I actually ran the military nondirectionals that came on my 51 Dodge for a couple years until they started to disassemble themselves. They tire guy estimated them to be from the 60's or 70's. With a top speed of 45 there was a bit less to worry about though.

Could be 25th week of '93? (253)

I thought that might be the case but in every example I've looked at there is a bit of spacing near the date part. Either way they seem to be older than me...

It was always either three digits, or four from 2000 on. Usually the numbers are after the DOT lettering. Check both sides of the tire as the complete code is usually just on one side. Judging by the sidewall cracking, it could be a three digit code. In any event, they are on borrowed time. A small triangle after a three digit code indicates the nineties as the decade, therefore, nothing made in the nineties would have a four digit code.

I'm getting new Toyo's put on Dreamscape today. I hope they are as good as you say they are.
