How do I change a Baldwin BF1223 primary fuel filter?

I have a primary fuel water separator filter that originally had the plastic bowl on the bottom.  The last shop replaced it with a Baldwin BF1223 one piece filter.  I got another BF1223 to replace it.

How do I replace this?  Baldwin's instructions state to drain the old filter, remove it, fill the new filter with diesel, and screw it on.  I opened the drain and diesel poured out, and out, and out.  I finally gave up and closed the drain after over 1/2 gallon came out.  I don't see a shutoff valve in the fuel lines.

I was able to change the secondary filter just fine and the engine purred to life just fine after that.

On my 1994 Series 60 there is a shutoff above the Secondary filter, but when you drain the Primary a lot of fuel comes out. Just fill the filter with diesel and be prepared to get diesel dripping off your elbows. I guess the only solution is another shut off valve above the Primary. Even though a lot drained out, it started up with no roughness.

Yes, I have a shutoff valve next to the secondary filter.

How much diesel should I expect to drain?

Seems like it was twice what the filter holds, at least. It just keep gurgling out. I did not want to find out if I could lose prime, so I got the filter on as fast as I could, but what a mess. Maybe it would stop draining at some point, but I did not feel lucky. In any event, the engine started without issues.

Did you fill the new filter with fuel before putting it on?

Brian, fill the new filter with clean diesel.  Set it down.  Get a drain pan and put it under the old filter area.  Remove the old filter and drop ii into the drain pan and quickly install the new filter.  It helps to have someone hand you the new filter.  Be quick and know that it is going to be messy.

The box it comes in makes for a handy receptacle.

That drain on the bottom makes that one tricky.

Happy coaching!
