When I first drove my bus home I had a terrible time getting the defroster to work, I finally located the two valves in the engine compartment and opened them, that should have fixed it but it didn't..................two years later I discovered the problem when pulling the old 8v71 out, while taking lines apart in the hoses going to the two defroster shut off valves I found a metal slug, it looked like a 1" ratched handle about 5 inches long and almost the diameter of the line just a bit smaller!  I guess it was used as a control device limiting flow to the front of the bus for some reason,  I'm amazed that any flow of any kind actually made it to the front...........come to think of it................"it didn't"!  Has anyone else ever come across anything like this? I probably won't put it back in the valve would have done the same thing, unless they were forcing the cooling system to back pressure the engine and transmission cooling!                    Pat

Busted somehow I figured you would be the first to reply......lol.........all I can say is that some irrate mechanic didn't care for a particular driver............. ;D..........it made for cold driving to say the least!

gumpy

Post a photo of it, and where you found it.

Never heard of something like that.

One of my valves had a broken stem and could not be closed.

Pat's bus came from the New England area too.  Maybe the driver was the mechanics ex-wife.

Hi yo silver

Maybe the original problem was a leaking heater core, and the valve wouldn't close it off for some reason...who knows??

As suggested by gumpy here is a photograph of the slug I found restricting my defroster when I pulled the 8v71 out of the bus.

Muddog,
The photo wouldn't come up for some reason so I copied it here for you.
