PD4106 Transmission access door latch

Trying to get our transmission access door to stay firmly closed, but couldn't. The lower section was only help closed by the rubber hold down and didn't look correct.

Found a broken piece inside the rear bumper which looks like something was there for the lower portion of the door latch to grab onto.

I've scoured this site and Google looking for a photo of what this is supposed to look like. I've found lots with the hinge across the top, and I've found a few with the vertical hinge like ours but the door on those did not go all the way down like ours. They appeared to stop at the level of the top of the bumper.

A couple of photos are below. Does anyone else with a 4106 have a similar door setup that could post a photo of what this thing is supposed to look like? I've got a friend with a welder willing to help fabricate something tomorrow, and I'm hoping to know better what we're trying to create.

  You have the automatic that was never standard in the 06,, A triangular bracket mounted horizontaly from the bumper acts as a "catch" that the verticle latch arm hooks behind when closed,, it is missing and belongs right where someone has placed another part for the trans.>>>Dan

Dan, that's what I assumed. Any chance you have one with the bracket? If I could see what I'm aiming for it will be much easier. Right now I'm going to have to guess what sold be there.

It looks like someone tried to make something out of flat stock, but apparently it gave out and broke off.

Would love to see what this is supposed to be.

  Red Rider, (AKA Mike) has a stock 06 with the Spicer trans,,we just installed a new clutch and had to remove this bracket to clear the trans at removal.. I'll try to photo it.>>>Dan

I don't remember if I gave you this info here or on another forum, but FYI, PD4106-2412 was delivered new in January of 1964 as fleet number C-6408 to Carolina Coach Co, HQ'd in Raleigh, NC.  CCC was, and still is, a Trailways affiliate.

I have a photo of the bracket you're asking about, but it's on a computer that's still packed away from my recent move from CA to WA, so I won't be much help at the moment.  But I agree with Dan - it's supposed to go right where that odd transmission piece by the bumper is.

Perhaps move that transmission cooler to a better place so you can fabricate a good lower bracket for the locking rods to engage and get rid of the exterior rubber latch?

The smallest bump to that back corner risks both water and transmission leaks.

Transmission cooler? Looks like a long cylindrical tank of some sort, but I never would have guessed cooler. Regardless, it's not looking like it's going to be easy or inexpensive to move, so it's going to stay put for now.

Going to have to figure out a way to keep the bottom of that door closed without resorting to a bungee cord.

Suggestions?

Might be a temporary fix, but at least it holds the door closed.
