MCI - how does low air switch control alternator delayed charging?

I could not change the alternator belts on my 8 by just disengaging the tension cylinder I always had to back the rod off on the tension cylinder then push against the springs inside the tension cylinder and my adjustments were always in the 1-1/4 range
