Did any Bus Manufactures back in the day ever employ the Detroit Diesel 6110 engine?  Just curious.  Apparently a few got into new-production over the road truck tractors.  Wondering about bus use.

I rebuilt a 6-110  30 or years ago and parts were hard to find.  This engine was in a construction tractor of some sort and was just an oversized 6-71 with 1940 technology.

Don't think so. They were very heavy, 4000 lbs. and initially designed to run in a narrow rpm range. They were used extensively in Budd RDC rail diesel cars, basically a self powered passenger car. We have a nearby town that has two; one of which they are finishing a partial restoration on for operation.

The Detroit engines that I remember were/are used in train and sometimes powerplants was the Series 149.  We had a few come in the Detroit shop and I remember they used individual heads that pulled out and were round.

There are still a lot of the 6-110 around WW Willams owns the engine and parts now, they were used in tractors, off road haul trucks, boats and generators I never saw one used in the transportation world. There is a gold mine not far from us that has 10 of the 6-110 still going strong in the old Euclid haul trucks, they are unique the muffler and the manifold are 1 piece

They were also used on drilling platforms, where deck space was at premium, mounted vertically running pumps and generators.

By the time they went with the blowers and turbos, and away from the supercharger, they were into development of the 8V-71. I recall they were considering using one early in the development of the Sceni-cruiser, but engine weight was a problem, and they are pretty tall.

You could also get a 71 series with the exhaust manifold with the muffler built into it. The 6-110 was used on Budd self powered passenger train cars (2 per car) layed down under the car like what Crown and Gillig and other bus manufacturers did. At 325hp, was very dependable-but heavy. Weighed as much as a 12V-71 (4,000lbs was the marine version with reduction gear included in the weight). Good Luck, TomC

I got to see an old 6110 lying in a bone yard.  It was next to a run out 743 220 Cummings.  Physically the engines looked very close in size.

I did not know they made a pancake version, but suspected.  Apparently the 6110 was used in coal mining operations with very low overhead tunnels.

Long ago, far away.  Thank you all.  Wonder if one would fit into a Crown?  Who would want to?  The marine turbo version was 400 hp at 2000 rpm?  :)
