Just finished changing the thermostats on our '80 Eagle, model 10, 8V71 to eliminate all the white smoke. Temp would never get above150-160. Temp is now 180 but still a lot of white smoke. Any suggestions? Thanks

Dennis is the smoke coming from both exhaust pipes or just 1 ?

Hi I'm a newbie too. My bus was passed up by several buyers because of huge clouds of white smoke and lots of oil on the right side of the engine and oil on the back end. The body was in such good shape that I bought it ready to do a rebuild if I had to. The smoke would clear up when it warmed up to operating temp but had a miss in the engine. I bought it and drove it 300 miles home with no problems. The next day I started it up and completely filled the holler with white smoke for 20 minutes. I researched the web and got lots of great advice from many on this and other forums. On this advice, here's what I did:

First I drained the 15W40 oil and installed a new filter and straight  40 Rottella oil.$180.
Second I changed both fuel filters.(the temp owner was buying fuel at a gas station instead of a truck stop.) The smoking dropped to about half of what it was before on start up. Wife and I started towards Cleveland(about 300 miles)We stopped in Marietta and bought #1 diesel fuel at a truck stop.
By the time we got to Cleveland 3hrs later, the only smoke I saw was  a puff of black smoke when I throttled down. The white smoke has stopped all together and the engine miss stopped totally and had good power. We were totally blown away!
I can't say that is your problem, I can only say that it apparently was mine!

Didn't say if your 8v71 is a turbo or not,but white smoke can definitely  mean a turbo is beginning to let go .If that is the problem ,you ain't seen white smoke yet!!

Here are pics with the valve covers removed. Anything else to check before reinstalling the covers. I plan on changing the oil this week. While driving back from having new tires installed, I had to stop at a light and the low oil pressure warning light came on. I knew that my oil level is good in fact it is above the full line. It seems to be making oil because I have not added any since we got the bus. Thanks

Before you get into too much, you could verify this by doing an oil sample.

Not a thing in the world wrong about being a new owner, it seems to me, you were packing enough gear to get the job done (figured out the issue and solved it), and your reply will be helpful to some in the future who come across it.

Good job Danny.

Oil analysis received today, >6% fuel in oil. Where should I begin the search for the source?
